About This Guide
A state-by-state rundown of where NBA and NCAA basketball betting is live, licensed, and legal for US bettors in 2026.
If you're trying to figure out where you can actually open an app and place a legal NBA or NCAA bet right now, the state-by-state picture matters more than anything else — because it doesn't matter how sharp your picks are if you're in a state where licensed operators aren't live yet. For the full breakdown, see our guide to Basketball Betting Legality by State: What US Bettors Need to Know.
Which states have live, legal online basketball betting in 2026?
Several states are fully operational with licensed online sportsbooks that cover NBA games, March Madness, and other basketball markets. New Jersey is one of the most established — sports betting there is regulated by the NJ Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE), the minimum age is 21, and you'll find every major app (FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, Caesars) available. New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Colorado, and Arizona are also live, each with its own state regulator overseeing licensed operators. Tennessee runs an online-only model regulated by the Tennessee Sports Wagering Advisory Council (SWAC), also at a 21-minimum — so there are no retail sportsbooks there, just apps.
On the flip side, Texas, California, and Florida do not have fully operational statewide legal online sports betting as of early 2025, with no confirmed live operators in those markets. If you're in one of those states, licensed online wagering on basketball isn't available to you yet, regardless of what offshore sites might claim. Laws do change, so it's worth checking back as legislative sessions move forward.
Can you bet on college basketball (NCAA) in legal states?
Yes — in every state where sports betting is live, NCAA tournament wagering including March Madness is explicitly permitted alongside NBA betting. That said, some states place restrictions on certain college prop bets, so the rules aren't perfectly uniform. Our dedicated page on Can You Legally Bet on College Basketball (NCAA) in the US? covers those nuances state by state.
How old do you have to be to bet on basketball legally?
The minimum age is 21 in the majority of legal states, including New Jersey, Tennessee, New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Colorado, and Arizona. A small number of states do permit betting at 18, but you need to verify your specific state before registering anywhere. We walk through the details on our How Old Do You Have to Be to Bet on Basketball in the US? page — don't assume age rules are the same everywhere.
What about geolocation — does it matter which state you're physically in?
This is one of the most overlooked issues for bettors who live near state lines or travel frequently. Sportsbook apps use GPS and Wi-Fi signals to verify you're physically inside a legal state at the moment you place a bet — your account's home state doesn't cut it if your body is across the border. VPNs won't help either; they'll typically get your bet voided or your account flagged. We've seen this trip up plenty of bettors who didn't realize how tight the enforcement is. Read our explainer on How Geolocation Works in Basketball Betting Apps and What Can Go Wrong before you run into the problem yourself.
